Honda Civic IV (1988–1991)

The fourth generation Honda Civic, produced between 1988 and 1991, is one of the most iconic models in the brand’s history. It was offered in two body styles – a 3-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan – and became known for its lightweight construction, simple mechanics, and impressive performance for its era. The wide range of engines allowed drivers to choose a version matching both budget and expectations.

The entry-level units were carbureted engines with displacements of 1.3 and 1.4 litres, identified as D13B1, D13B2 and D14A1. The final years of production introduced a dual-carburetor Keihin setup, enabling these engines to reach up to 90 HP from less than 1.4 litres – an impressive figure at the time.

Higher trim levels featured electronically controlled fuel injection. The 1.5-litre engine (D15B2) produced 90 HP, and became a popular base for modifications. A well-executed MPFI conversion (from dual-point to multi-point injection), combined with an upgraded intake and exhaust system, allowed these engines to reach approx. 110–120 HP – often outperforming the factory 1.6-litre D16A6 and D16Z2 units.

More performance-oriented models used the DOHC engine D16A9, producing 130 HP. The ultimate specification of the fourth generation Civic was the legendary B16A1, installed exclusively in the hatchback EE9 chassis. With its cutting-edge (for the time) VTEC system, lightweight body and 150 HP at only 1595 cc, the EE9 remains one of the most respected hot-hatches of its time, capable of accelerating from 0–100 km/h in around 7.2 seconds.

Honda Civic IV (1988–1991) – OEM Genuine Parts

More than 30 years after the end of production, many Honda OEM parts for the Civic IV have been discontinued. Despite this, we continue to supply a wide selection of original service components for this classic model. These include oil filters, engine seals, suspension bushings and essential gaskets used during valve clearance adjustment or routine maintenance.

Original Honda valve cover gaskets, O-rings and rotary shaft seals are especially valuable for addressing typical leaks in ageing D-series and B-series engines. Genuine oil pan gaskets are also available, helping eliminate the common issue of oil drips under the vehicle. For customers looking for rare or chassis-specific components, we prepare personalised OEM quotations based on VIN and a detailed parts list.

Honda Civic IV (1988–1991) – High-Quality Aftermarket Parts

Due to the age of the model and the limited availability of original components, high-quality aftermarket parts often become the preferred choice for Civic IV owners. Many aftermarket manufacturers still produce components at the same or higher quality level than the original Honda parts from the late 80s and early 90s.

We offer components from brands that supplied Honda with parts for factory assembly:

  • Koyo and NSK – timing and accessory bearings and tensioners,
  • NOK – rotary shaft seals for crankshaft and camshaft, identical in quality to the original Honda seals,
  • Taiho – main and rod bearings for engine rebuilds,
  • Riken and Teikoku – piston rings for D-series and B-series engines.

These components allow complete and reliable engine overhauls, restoring performance to the same level as when the car left the factory. Whether maintaining a stock D-series or rebuilding a B16A1 performance engine, we provide accurate part matching tailored to the exact model and engine code.

Updated Parts Availability for Honda Civic IV

Thanks to high demand from enthusiasts and the classic Honda community, many crucial parts for the Civic IV remain in production or are regularly restocked. At Jdmshop.eu, we continuously update our inventory with components essential for servicing and restoring 1988–1991 Civics.

  • NOK crankshaft and camshaft seals,
  • Taiho connecting rod and main bearings,
  • Riken and Teikoku piston rings,
  • Koyo and NSK timing and accessory bearings,
  • valve cover gaskets and adjustment-related seals,
  • oil pan gaskets and sealing components,
  • filters (oil, air, fuel) from proven manufacturers.

We also provide personalised sourcing for rare components. Send us your VIN and the parts list, and we will prepare an individual quotation for OEM and premium aftermarket options.

FAQ – Honda Civic IV (1988–1991)

Are OEM Honda parts for the Civic IV still produced?
Most structural and mechanical OEM parts are discontinued, but essential service items such as filters, seals, valve cover gaskets and bushings are still available. For the rest, we offer premium aftermarket replacements that match or exceed original quality.

Which aftermarket brands offer OEM-level quality for the Civic IV?
NOK (seals), Koyo and NSK (bearings, pulleys), Taiho (engine bearings), and Riken/Teikoku (piston rings) deliver quality equivalent to factory Honda components from the late 80s and early 90s.

Is the D-series engine suitable for tuning?
Yes. The D15B2, after MPFI conversion and basic intake/exhaust upgrades, can reach approx. 110–120 HP. D16A6 and D16Z2 are also responsive to tuning.

Are parts still available for the B16A1 engine (EE9)?
Most service parts – seals, bearings, filters, ignition components – are available. Body-specific elements are more limited, but we assist with sourcing based on VIN.

Should rotary seals be replaced preventively?
Yes. After 30+ years, hardened crankshaft and camshaft seals are one of the main causes of oil leaks. Replacing them with new NOK seals restores long-term reliability.

Are full gasket and seal kits available for D-series and B-series engines?
In many cases yes – valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets, crank and cam seals, timing cover seals and O-rings can be matched precisely to the engine code.

Can you match parts for my Civic IV using the VIN?
Absolutely. Due to numerous differences between trims, years and engine variants, VIN-based matching is the safest and most accurate method for identifying correct components.
